My Observations
Date: February 5, 2024 @ 08:30
Area: Peachland Forest Service road approximately the 14.5km marker, past Bolivar Creek/FSR
The indicated route is from the turn off at Brenda Mines Road to Peachland Forest Service Road
Temperature: -3
Weather: Surrounding fog, with light <> medium <> heavy snowfall (depending on elevation)
Accumulation: 1 1/2” dry snow
Wind: Calm
Visibility: Good
Conditions: 1 – 1 1/2” fresh dry snow, still accumulating. Very marginal conditions, but I was on a road afterall.
Observations: There goes the neighborhood………
Today wasn’t about the skiing so much as gathering information/evidence, investigating where the trucks full of logs were coming from.
I was going to drive up as I did last week, but the road was blocked by boulders. Doesn’t stop me though! I busted out my xc gear and cruised on up.
The snow coverage was quite thin on top of a frozen, freshly made logging road, but I pressed on. Marginal conditions at best as I kept finding dirt, rocks and tree remnants.
No wildlife sightings other than 2 crows. Old tracks from a lone coyote meandered up the road, made me think he was working the “Littlest Hobo” vibe., and a set of bunny tracks as well
Rating: Depressing
I’m going to let the photos speak for themselves.
The first 3 are from the very top of the road approx at marker 18. The rest of the photos are taken intermittently the whole way down.
The road is now blocked by large stones at the moment, but I suspect the logs were being pulled out from this area as late as last week. As you can see, there are plenty of logs left behind along with the mess of slash piles as well. To the best of my knowledge, this is happening in our Watershed, in our backyard.
I’ll just leave this one here….
