Please help us celebrate World water Day – this year’s theme is The Future of Water.
What is the future of water in the Okanagan, in BC, in Canada? From climate change, industrial land use, Indigenous Relations, to global politics, the abundant water that most take for granted is under threat.
World Water Day is Saturday, March 22, 2025 and the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance (PWPA) is hosting a celebration to honour water, and to explore the current events that threaten water security.
“The fragility of our water supply has never been more apparent”, says Taryn Skalbania, PWPA founder. “From global impacts such as climate change to local planning decisions, access to fresh water is under threat. And with the added chaos of the American economic stance, some might say water is now a matter of national security.”
The World Water Day event begins with acknowledgement of the Syilx Territory and their Syilx Water Declaration, and its message confirming the sacred nature of water.
Long-time environmental advocate, former MLA, and Peachland resident, Judi Tyabji will examine the impacts of local and international politics, and their role in water security. Tyabji states “the risk to our resources is real and rising, however our opportunity to protect and enhance our water is also greater then ever, if we work together on a clear plan.”
The screening of award-winning short film “Bringing the Salmon Home” will follow. It tells the story of the Syilx Okanagan, Secwépemc, and Ktunaxa Nations who uphold their sacred responsibility to reintroduce the salmon to the upper Columbia River system, introduced by Bringing the Salmon Home Initiative representatives.
A “meet and greet” with the new MLA for the Kelowna-Peachland constituency, Macklin McCall, and Peachland Councillors will take place to inform us about local water issues and answer questions regarding impacts on Peachland.
The celebration continues with live music by local musician Chris Meszaros, including a water-themed playlist, and refreshments. The event takes place on March 22, 2025 at the Peachland 50+ Centre 5672 Beach Avenue in Peachland. Doors open at 6:30, with activities getting underway at 7:00pm. Deserts and refreshments will be served. Suggested donation is $10.00. Everyone is welcome, especially neighbours new to Peachland.
