Area: Wandered above Peachland Creek today, on the Northish side, just to see how far I can get!

Visibility: Perfect

Conditions: A little damp

Observations: Never walked here…Thought we’d give it a go!

White Dapperling? or Wood Mushroom?

Large Leaved Lupine This tall and beautiful lupine can reach heights of 1.5 m! Large-leaved lupines are a great plant to grow in infertile soils, as they add nutrients back into the soil. This plant produces tall spikes of deep blue to purple pea-shaped flowers, blooming in late spring. The flowers turn into woolly brown pods containing seeds. And it is a FIRESMART plant!!!

King Bolete/Penny Bun/Porcini? These boletes are thick, dense, mushrooms with a nutty, meaty flavor and smooth, creamy texture after cooking. One reason it is so beloved is because it’s incredible denseness makes it quite a meal. The flesh gets tender in cooking and doesn’t disintegrate like some other mushrooms. Everywhere they grow, they are considered the choicest of edible mushrooms.

Golden Scalycap? Despite their attractive appearance, these and other scalycaps (Pholiota species) are definitely not edible mushrooms, although in the past some members of this genus were considered to be so.

Shaggy Scalycap? Smells and tastes like radish (a slightly bitter taste). Despite their attractive appearance, these and other scalycaps (Pholiota species) are definitely not edible mushrooms, although in the past some members of this genus were considered to be so.

Shaggy mane My first time finding these!! Going to try to turn one into an ink wash! When young it is an excellent edible mushroom provided that it is eaten soon after being collected (it keeps very badly because of the autodigestion of its gills and cap). If long-term storage is desired, microwaving, sauteing or simmering until limp will allow the mushrooms to be stored in a refrigerator for several days or frozen.
