B’s Watershed Watch Update March 03, 2025

March 3, 2025 by Barb H

Barb Haley, Watershed Watch Chair

My Observations

Date: March 03, 2025 @0900

Area: Wilson Lake – Suzy’s Pond Loop

Temperature: +10C

Weather: Sunny

Wind: Calm

Visibility: Excellent

Conditions: Amazing!

Observations: Beautiful Spring day today! So glad the freezing temps are done weith.

Its definitely Spring like and with that comes Spring conditions.

We had a little bit of fresh snow which made the skiing nice, but underneath that is the frozen surface to start out with, especially at the start of the day. This makes for icey, dicey conditions anywhere that is in the shade, especially under the trees. Under the trees is extra spicey, since during the day the trees drip the melt and then it freezes overnight. Anythign that gets sun exposed will be going throught the melt -freeze cycle. Areas that get the sun exposure softens up quite nicely!

At this point in our winter the snow packs seems to have settled out at 2.5ft, less in the heavier canopied parts of the forest. This feels like a very low snow pack year, unless the newer trees have had huge growth spurts over the last few years, I usually ski over these trees in the old cutblocks up here, more openings. I wonder what the summer will bring, if it will be drier and hotter, because of the lower than usual snow pack we have been getting the last few years.

Happy creatures out and about!
Miss Wilson!
Gorgeous day!

Things are loosening up, this creek is bubbling away already!
