B’s Watershed Watch Update April 30, 2024

April 30, 2024 by Barb H

Barb Haley, Watershed Watch Chair

My Observations

Date: April 30, 2024

Area: Above Glen Lake, post-2023 fire area

Temperature: 8C, if it was that.

Weather: Overcast with light rain

Visibility: Excellent

Conditions: Cool and damp (finally!)

Observations:

Went for a little drive this morning to have a peak at what the logging crew has been up to in the fire area above Glen Lake.

Pretty disappointed to see that the entire area looks lot like a ski hill at the moment. I have heard that teh chosed logging company was supposed to be clearing out the burnt trees and leaving the healthy ones. Looks a lot like they are taking more that what was allowed, more like completely raping the land. The hillsides are cleared flat, leaving nothing behind to anchor the soils and material to where they belong. We have yet to see how this affect all of us below; the watershed, future wildlife habitat, more wildfires, regrowth, climate…..

Panorama view of the “road” accessing the post 2023 fire above Glen Lake where a logging company is removing the burnt/danger trees ang leaving the healthy trees alone……..
